Every day I visit my usual websites for news and commentary, and every day since the election of Donald Trump to the presidency I see the crazies clamoring that Donald Trump is Adolph Hitler, that America is now a fascist nation of jackbooted storm troopers, and that the government of the United States is fast becoming a dictatorship.
If some of these protestors truly believe such things—and I’m guessing some of them do—they are as ignorant as dirt about history and politics. To compare Trump favorably to Hitler, to truly believe that Americans are goose stepping to the grocery store, to believe that our government is somehow the New World Reich, shows an appalling lack of political acumen and a blighted sense of even the recent past.
Not only are these people embarrassing themselves, but they are driving potential voters into the ranks of their adversaries. Every time some masked leftists appear on the evening news waving baseball bats and hurling obscenities, most of those watching that news justly condemn them as fascistic bullies. Every time some tiresome old movie star or celebrity hurls curses Donald Trump, a thousand disgusted voters move closer to Trump’s camp. Every time some off-the-wall politician calls for mobs in the street, voters everywhere are watching and deciding that this is not the party they want running the country. (See #Walkaway.)
Keep up the extremism, gang, if you want to see the movement you espouse going down the tubes. A day of reckoning is coming for you, and it won’t occur in some street battle or on some Hollywood stage.
Your last stand will take place where it should—in a voting booth.
